Chapter 19

Medusa and Cabbage had been transported to parts unknown.

There was no telling what kind of interaction Cabbage's portal had encountered when it tried to operate inside the portal barrier around Sarpedon. Prince Onwin might be able to help me, but I didn't know if he'd be willing.

He'd lured Cabbage away from us with promises of quality father-daughter time. Cabbage loved getting to know her dad. Unfortunately, it had been a ruse by Onwin. A way to cripple Monster Squad temporarily so the gods of chaos could take over the divine realm.

Which meant he probably wouldn't care that she was missing. He wouldn't lift a finger to help me find her. That said, I still needed to ask him. Unless Erolith had a portaling ability I didn't know about, Onwin was the only high fae who could help me.

This was all by design. Hermes didn't want Monster Squad operational anymore. Removing the gorgons from the equation ensured that. With Medusa and Cabbage gone, our team was effectively dismantled.

If I went to Onwin and requested help, he'd agree to help me so long as I accepted the position as leader of the Oblivion Guard. Then I'd be so tied up with those duties that it wouldn't matter if Cabbage and Medusa were back.

Then again, maybe they could carry on without me. Maybe Cabbage, Medusa, Fred, and Hannah were enough to take out Masako and her necroton horde. As Medusa had said, I was a lone wolf. I didn't operate well with a team.

The idea of being bound to the Oblivion Guard again made my skin crawl. I would voluntarily give up my freedom and place the fae yoke around my neck. I would be little more than a slave to Onwin and by proxy, the gods of chaos.

So why had I already convinced myself it was the right move?

The answer was simple. I liked Cabbage and Medusa. They were family as much as Fred and Hannah were. They might be floating in a void or trapped in a hell dimension.

I couldn't leave them to that fate even if I consigned myself to a life of fae servitude. I nodded to myself as if that would be reassuring. It wasn't. But it was the only card I could play.

So, I walked to the deck behind the house and used the Tetron to return me to Feary Prime.

Dusa flinched when I appeared in front of her. "No luck?"

I shook my head. "No. There was a deaf guy in Alpha, but no one else. The Dusa of the other dimensions never found a man and had kids. The other gorgons never returned to visit her and see their new many-greats grandkids."

Dusa winced. "Yeah."

I raised an eyebrow. "Something wrong?"

She bit her bottom lip and stared at me for a moment. "It's not a happily ever after situation, Cain. The father isn't in the picture."

"Oh." I wasn't sure what to say. "Sorry to hear that."

She smiled. "It's okay. The curse is lifted. My little girls will be the first gorgons to grow up with something approaching normality.
